Johann Jakob Bernhardi

Johann Jakob Bernhardi (born September 1, 1774 in Erfurt ; † May 13, 1850 there ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Bernh. ".

Life

Bernhardi studied medicine and botany in Erfurt and was then a doctor in Erfurt for some time. In 1799 he became director of the botanical garden in Erfurt (in Gartenstrasse) and in 1809 professor of botany, zoology, mineralogy and pharmacy (materia medica) at the medical faculty in Erfurt. He remained director of the Botanical Gardens until his death and is buried there.

His extensive herbarium of 60,000 copies was sold to the USA after his death and forms part of the herbarium of the Missouri Botanical Garden.

He was the editor of the Thuringian garden newspaper and the general German garden magazine .

Honors

In 1820 Bernhardi was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . The genus of the fork-leaf family (Psilotaceae) Bernhardia Willd. ex Bernh. is named in his honor. Bernhardi was the first to describe some orchids, among other things. A street in Erfurt is named in his honor.
