Iraqi National Astronomical Observatory
The Iraqi National Astronomical Observatory was a planned observatory in Iraq .
In 1982 the German companies Zeiss , Krupp and MAN were commissioned to build an observatory on Mt. Korak in northern Iraq at an altitude of 2600 meters. It was planned to erect a 1.2 and a 3.6 meter reflector telescope and a 30 meter millimeter wave radio telescope including buildings. The telescopes corresponded to the telescopes under development for the Calar Alto Observatory and for the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the millimeter range on Pico Veleta.
The project was never finished and today there is only one ruin that was destroyed in the First Gulf War between Iraq and Iran. This consists of a dome with holes, which serves as a carrier for mobile radio and television antennas.
