Falmouth is the capital of the Parish Trelawny in Jamaica , around 30 km from Montego Bay . It is named after the birthplace of the then Governor Sir William Trelawny, Falmouth in England. The historic city center is considered to be one of the best preserved in the Caribbean . In 2010 the population was 7,400.

history

Falmouth was founded in 1769 by Thomas Reid. It was systematically planned, the wide, right-angled street pattern can still be seen today. Even before New York , the city was supplied with tap water. In Falmouth and on the plantations in the area, excellent examples of Georgian architecture were created in the form of Jamaican Georgian Architecture, which was changed by the climatic conditions in the tropics . One of the Jamaican plantation owners and slave owners was John Tharp (1736-1804), who had both his manor house and a hospital for sick slaves on the Good Hope plantation and his city palace built at its own export dock in Falmouth in the Georgian style .

By 1800 Falmouth flourished as a trading center for Trelawny, especially for sugar cane. The city was an important export port for sugar molasses . After the end of slavery in Jamaica in 1838, the city began to decline. The lack of money meant, among other things, that buildings from the period between 1790 and 1840 were not replaced by new ones.

Urban renewal and development

Some of the older buildings in and around Falmouth have been restored in recent years by the North American foundation-funded Falmouth Heritage Renewal and the locally based Falmouth Restoration Company and are a tourist attraction. The neo-Gothic parsonage of the Baptist congregation from 1798 became the seat of the organization. The Jewish cemetery was restored, as was the post office from 1815. In 2011, the Anglican church, built in 1796, was renovated and numerous private wooden houses were repaired, some even re-covered with traditional wooden shingles.

Since 2011, Falmouth has been the port of call for cruise ships that dock in the newly built quay and harbor area. The effects of these investments remain to be seen, however, as few tourists have left the ships to go ashore.

Sports

The Village United FC football club is based in Falmouth.
