Ian Bowyer (born June 6, 1951 in Little Sutton near Ellesmere Port , England ) is a former English football player , who was best known for his time with the English first division club Nottingham Forest , with whom he won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980.

Player career

Manchester City and Leyton Orient (1968–1973)

Ian Bowyer, who was born in North West England , began his professional career at Manchester City , a club in his home region. As early as 1969 Bowyer celebrated his first title with his team. City secured the FA Cup title in 1968/69 by beating Leicester City 1-0 in the final . In the following season, his team even secured two titles. City first won the League Cup in the final against West Bromwich Albion , Bowyer was substituted on during the game and then triumphed in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1969/70 with a 1-0 victory over Polish Cup winner Górnik Zabrze . Before the 1971/72 season he moved to the English second division club Leyton Orient , where he promised better employment opportunities. After two years as a regular player, he moved to league rivals Nottingham Forest in 1973 .

Nottingham Forest (1973–1981 and 1982–1987)

In the 1976/77 season he was promoted to the Football League First Division with his new team and in the following season the newly promoted sensationally won the English championship in the Football League First Division in 1977/78 in front of Liverpool FC . Bowyer (29 games / 4 goals) won his second title after the League Cup in 1970. As a champion in the National Champion Cup 1979 , Forest surprisingly won the National Champion Cup in the Olympic Stadium in Munich with 1-0 against the Swedish champions Malmö FF . Ian Bowyer played 90 minutes and then celebrated the greatest success of his career.

As the defending champion, he was again eligible to compete in the national championship cup in 1980 , but Bowyer and his team were able to defend the title in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid 1-0 against the German champions Hamburger SV . Bowyer was again on the field for the full length of the game. During this time, Nottingham Forest also won the English League Cup in 1978 against Liverpool FC and in 1979 against Southampton FC and the European Supercup in 1979 against FC Barcelona . After the 1980/81 season, Ian Bowyer decided to change clubs and joined Sunderland AFC for the 1981/82 season .

After an unsatisfactory year, however, he decided to return to his old club. In the following years Bowyer and his team could not build on previous successes, but reached the semi-finals in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup , but retired there after a 2-0 home win under dubious circumstances 3-0 at RSC Anderlecht . After the 1986/87 season, the now 36-year-old Ian Bowyer decided to leave Nottingham Forest for good and to end his career as a player-coach at Hereford United . Hereford was playing in the fourth highest English division at that time. In the league he was not very successful with his team, but succeeded in the 1989/90 season in the final with the victory over FC Wrexham, winning the Welsh Cup .

After this success he left Hereford and played one last season at the amateur club Grantham Town. After serving as assistant coach at Plymouth Argyle , Rotherham United and Birmingham City , he later returned to Nottingham Forest for three years as the coach of the second team . He currently works as a scout for Portsmouth FC .
