Deng Chao, 2011

Deng Chao ( Chinese  鄧 超 , Pinyin Dèng Chāo ; born February 8, 1979 in Nanchang , Jiangxi ) is a Chinese actor , comedian and singer . He became known through the reality show Keep Running . His more recent films such as The Breakup Guru (2014), The Mermaid (2016) and Duckweed (2017) are among the most successful films of all time in China. In 2017 Deng was named Best Actor at the Golden Rooster Awards for his role in The Dead End (2015).

Career

Deng works primarily as an actor, often in comedies . As a singer, he mainly appeared in the soundtracks of his films.

Beginnings

Deng studied at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing and during this time attracted attention through theater appearances in Cui Hua , Serve Suancai and Please . After graduating, he turned to a film career. In 2003, his role in the historic television series The Young Emperor and in Gao Xixi's Happiness as Flowers made him known.

Growing awareness

In 2007, Deng received a role in Feng Xiaogang's war film Heroes of War - Assembly , which received positive acclaim from both critics and audiences. Deng won the Hundred Flowers Awards for Best Supporting Actor for this role , which marked the start of his successful cinema career. In 2008 he starred in Cao Baoping's The Equation of Love and Death and was recognized for it at the Golden Phoenix Awards .

In 2010 he had a role in Tsui Hark's Detective Dee and Mystery of the Phantom Flames , for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards . The fantasy film Mural followed in 2011, directed by Gordon Chan . Between 2012 and 2014 he played in the The Four trilogy, which is based on the Si Da Ming Bu novel series by Woon Swee Oan .

Direction work and keep running

2013 Deng appeared in Peter Chan's American Dreams in China . The film was a box office hit and received good reviews. The Taipei Times called the film "a well-made conversation about the increasing power of China" and praised Deng for portraying an "idealist with a defeated ego."

With the romantic comedy The Breakup Guru , Deng made his directorial debut in 2014 in collaboration with Yu Baimei , with Yang Mi and himself in the lead roles. The film grossed 180 million yuan on the opening weekend and the reviews were positive too. That same year, Deng became part of the reality show Keep Running , a remake of the South Korean show Running Man . The show enjoyed great popularity and made Deng Chao known across the country. In 2014 Deng was voted the most economically valuable Chinese actor.

The next film role was in Deng thriller The Dead End of Cao Baoping , on the side of Duan Yihong . Together with him and Guo Tao , he shared the award for best actor at the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival , and won the category at the Golden Rooster Awards 2017 alone. Again together with Yu Baimei, Deng brought his next comedy Devil and Angel to the cinemas in 2015 , which, however, unlike its predecessor, had to take negative reviews and was named the most disappointing film of the year.

Success since 2016

In 2016, Deng began starring in Stephen Chow's The Mermaid . The film was the most financially successful Chinese film of all time at the time of its release. His next film, I Belonged to You, was also very successful. Through these successes, he was able to position himself in 2016 on the list of the economically most valuable Chinese stars compiled by CBN Weekly at number 3 and was listed as the financially most successful Chinese cinema actor.

In 2017 Deng starred in Han Hans' comedy Duckweed , which was a huge hit with audiences and critics. This was followed by a role in The Liquidator by Xu Jizhou .

Deng will star in Zhang Yimou's Shadow .
