Career

2010–2018: beginnings

Julian Bojko began playing snooker at the age of about six after becoming aware of the sport through television broadcasts. A little later he started playing snooker tournaments in his hometown of Kiev . In December 2012 he took part in the Ukrainian championship for the first time. The seven-year-old made it into the round of 16, in which he was clearly defeated by former professional Alan Trigg (0: 3), who then became Ukrainian champions for the third time in a row.

In March 2013, Boyko took part in an international tournament for the first time, the U21 European Championship in Bor , Serbia , and was eliminated with just one win in the group stage. Two months later, at the age of seven, he was the youngest participant in the European Men's Championship in Zielona Góra . In the five preliminary round games, he only won two frames and was eliminated from the bottom of the group. He also finished last in his group at the 2013 Amateur World Championship , this time only winning one frame. At the Ukrainian championship in 2013 he reached the second round again and only just lost to Ihor Slobodjanjuk (2: 3).

In September 2014, Boyko reached the round of 16 at the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup, which he lost 3-1 to Wladyslaw Vyshnevskyj . After he was eliminated in the preliminary round of the national championship of adults, he reached the quarter-finals of the Ukrainian U21 championship , in which he was defeated by the eventual finalist Mykola Nykyforow (1: 2).

In April 2015, Boyko was eliminated from the first round of the Ukrainian 6-Red Championship . A month later he became national champion of the U21 juniors for the first time with a 3-0 final win against Jurij Semko . In the adult division , he made it to the semi-finals for the first time in the same year, in which he had to admit defeat to future Ukrainian champions Serhiy Petrasch 1: 4. At the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup in 2015, he lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual tournament winner Maksym Stoljartschuk (0: 3).

After he was eliminated in the first round since 2013 another at five international amateur championships ( U21 European Championship in 2014 , EM 2014 , EM 2015 , U21 World Cup 2015 , Euro U21 2016 ), Boyko came in February 2016 at the inaugural U18 Championship for first time beyond the group stage. In the round of the last 56 he was defeated by the Irish Fergal Quinn (0: 3). Two months later, he managed to defend his title in the Ukrainian U21 championship with a 3-1 win in the final against Oleksij Rudenko . Shortly thereafter, he was eliminated from the adults in the round of 16 against Jewhen Kamelkow (0: 3). The first edition of the 6-Red European Championship in Vilnius , Lithuania, ended for him without a frame gain in the preliminary round. In June 2016 he won the FSU Open (3: 1) in the final against Serhij Petrasch. Two weeks later he reached the semi-finals of the Minsk Open in the Belarusian capital, in which he was only barely defeated by the eventual tournament winner Jeff Jacobs from Belgium (2: 3).

In the preliminary round he had defeated the former French champion Niel Vincent (3: 2). In the round of the last 64 Bojko was narrowly defeated by the Englishman Taylor Fish (2: 3). Then he also took part in the U21 juniors and men in the European Championship, but retired there in the group stage. After he was eliminated in the preliminary round of the Minsk Snooker Cup, he reached the final of the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup at the end of 2017, which he lost 3-1 to Serhiy Issajenko , and reached the quarter-finals at KN Taurė in Vilnius.

2018/19: Challenge Tour

In May 2018, Ukrainian players, Boyko and Serhij Issajenko , took part in the Q School Main Tour qualification tournament for the first time. However, Bojko remained without a win in all three tournaments. The participants in the Challenge Tour , which was reintroduced for the 2018/19 season , were determined based on the overall ranking ( Order of Merit ) of the Q School . The best 64 athletes not qualified for the Main Tour should get a starting place. Due to numerous cancellations, Bojko, listed on rank 141, was also allowed to compete in the first tournament in June 2018. However, he lost his opening game 3-0 against Luke Simmonds . A few days later he reached the last sixteen at the 6-Red European Championship, in which he was defeated by Irishman Greg Casey 4-0.

In July 2018 Boyko became two Ukrainian junior champions after defeating Heorhij Petrunko ( U16 ) and Andrij Kljestow ( U21 ) 2-0 in the finals. A little later he moved into the main round for the first time at the Paul Hunter Classic , his second Main Tour tournament. After defeating Brandon Sargeant 4: 2, he had to admit defeat 1: 4 to Englishman Billy Joe Castle in the round of 128 . In May 2019, Bojko made another attempt to qualify for the professional tour through the Q School. However, he only reached the second round in two out of three tournaments and clearly failed. In December 2019 he won the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup by beating Andrij Schulha 4-0 in the final. In the final he met another ex-professional, the Englishman Ashley Hugill . In the meantime Bojko took the lead 3: 2, but finally lost to the Englishman 3: 5 and narrowly missed the qualification for the professional tour. Due to tournament cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the qualification criteria were re-regulated in June 2020 and Bojko also got the right to start the Main Tour seasons 2020/21 and 2021/22 , making him the first Ukrainian to become a professional snooker. At the age of 14, he was the youngest player to date to receive professional status.

In February, Boyko won the Ukrainian 6-Red championship with a 5-2 final win over Alan Trigg . At 14 years and just under five months, he is the youngest ever winner of a Ukrainian individual championship in the adult snooker sport. In March 2020, the European Amateur Championships took place in Albufeira, Portugal . After he was eliminated in the two junior tournaments ( U18 , U21 ) in the round of 16, he moved into the final of the 6-Red European Championship , in which he was European champion with a 5-3 win against the Welsh ex-professional Darren Morgan . At the final men's snooker tournament , he made it into the round of 32 for the first time.

In July 2020, due to his participation in the finals at the WSF Open, he was one of 34 amateurs eligible to qualify for the professional world championship . In the first round, Boyko, who was the first Ukrainian to qualify for the World Cup, met the Malaysian Thor Chuan Leong , against whom he was able to keep up to 3: 3, but finally lost with 3: 6. Two months later, he became Ukrainian U21 champions for the fourth time .
