final

Doug Mountjoy had won the tournament two years earlier and was in the 1981 World Cup final, which he lost to England's Steve Davis . His opponent Terry Griffiths had become world champion in 1979 at the end of his first professional season, but he had not yet won the Welsh professional championship.

Griffiths took the lead with two breaks of over fifty points at the start with 0-2 before Mountjoy turned the game around. From now on, the other player turned the party, so that at a score of 7: 8 for Griffiths Mountjoy it was possible to get into the decider and win it to win the tournament.
