Hortus Belvedereanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hortus Belvedereanus is a catalog published in several editions from 1820 to 1826 of plants that were in the collections of the Orangery in Belvedere (Weimar) . The author is August Wilhelm Dennstedt . The catalog was published in the country's industrial Comptoir of Friedrich Justin Bertuch in Weimar .

This was of equal interest to both the client Carl August and Goethe . In addition to botanical, it also served mercantile purposes, such as buying and selling rare plants, including seeds from overseas and from Russia. The collection was expanded through several directories created between 1812 and 1817, which were finally followed by the Hortus Belvedereanus in 1820 . Belvedere claimed to have one of the richest collections of plants on the European mainland. This would not have appeared like this if the court gardener Johann Christian Sckell had not provided support as a colleague.

Dennstedt's inventory was incomplete because he only included those plants that he was able to examine and determine in the three years that he worked on the catalog, as he stated in the foreword. The catalog nevertheless contained approx. 7900 species and varieties. In addition to numerous orange trees, myrrh trees, fig trees and cypresses, the lists also include nut species, magnolias, tulip trees and some dogwood species.
