Reinhard Schau (born September 8, 1935 in Lyck , East Prussia ; † March 9, 2019 in Weimar ) was a German opera director and university professor .

Schau studied opera directing with Heinz Rückert at the University of Music in Halle (1954/55) and with Carl Riha at the University of Music in (East) Berlin (1955–59).

Until 1964 he worked as a director at the state theaters of Saxony in Radebeul , where he a. a. worked with the dramaturge Dieter Härtwig . From 1964 to 1969, Schau was opera director at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin , then until 1977 opera director of the stages in Magdeburg . He staged the world premieres of Dieter Nowka's opera Die Erbschaft (1960), Bill Brook and Old Fritz by Rainer Kunad (both 1965), Udo Zimmermann's White Rose (1968) and The Second Decision (1970); the German-language premiere of Prokofiev's The True Man (1963) and the GDR premieres of Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Danton's Death by Gottfried von Eine (1967).

In 1977 Schau received a call to the Liszt School of Music Weimar , where he directed the opera school until 2001. In addition, he held a substitute professorship for stage studies and music theater. In 1982 he received his doctorate from the Martin Luther University in Halle with a dissertation on singing training in the GDR. Between 1982 and 1988 he published articles in the specialist journal Theater der Zeit . In 1991, Schau initiated the foundation of the Friends of the Weimar University of Music, which he then headed.

After his retirement, the university made him its honorary senator . Since 2003 he has published several books: Scenes around Hugo Wolf , on the history of the Weimar Belvedere Palace and in particular the Belvedere Palace Music High School and the Marie Seebach Foundation in Weimar.
