List of countries by Christian population
The following list sorts countries and territories according to their percentage of the Christian population. It also gives the total number of Christians within a country and, if numbers are available, their sectoral distribution. Much of the data and information come from a 2011 study by the Pew Research Center, as well as from censuses and information from the national statistical offices. It should be noted that some of the figures are based on estimates. In addition, the national statistics on religious affiliation in some countries also include non-practicing Christians in the Christian population.
In 2011 Christianity was the largest religious group in the world with around 2.2 billion followers worldwide, before Islam . Of the 232 countries and territories surveyed in the Pew Research Center study, 176 had a Christian majority. The countries with the largest Christian populations were the United States (247 million), Brazil (176 million), Mexico (108 million), Russia (105 million), and the Philippines (87 million). World regions with a Christian majority are Europe , North America , South America , Australasia and the southern half of Africa . There are also significant Christian minorities in almost every other region of the world. In the last few decades, the Christian population in Europe has stagnated or shrunk, while it has grown rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa .
The largest denomination of Christianity is Catholicism with 1.2 billion followers, making 52.9% of the world's Christian population and 15.9% of the world's population Catholics. Catholicism is particularly dominant in Latin America and southern Europe . Protestants are the second largest denomination of Christianity and with approx. 800 million followers have a share of 34.9% of the Christian population (11.6% share of the world population). Protestantism has its main focus in northwestern Europe , North America and the Anglophone part of Africa. The number of Orthodox Christians is estimated at just under 260 million, making them 11.4% of the Christian population (3.4% of the world population). Most of the Orthodox Christians live in Eastern and Southeastern Europe , the Near East and East Africa . Other Christians, why u. a. the Jehovah's Witnesses , charismatics and various free churches are estimated at around 28 million. This means that 1.4% of Christians and 0.4% of the world's population do not belong to any of the three major Christian denominations.
Christianity is the state religion in the following 15 nations : Argentina (Catholic Church), Armenia ( Armenian Apostolic Church ), Tuvalu ( Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu ), Tonga ( Wesleyan Church of Tonga ), Costa Rica (Catholic Church), Denmark ( Danish People's Church ) , England ( Church of England ), Greece ( Greek Orthodox Church ) , Georgia ( Orthodox Church) , Iceland ( Icelandic State Church ), Liechtenstein (Catholic Church), Malta (Catholic Church), Monaco (Catholic Church), Vatican City (Catholic Church ) and Zambia .
