Wismar old armory
The old armory is a listed building on Ulmenstrasse in Wismar in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). It is considered to be an important baroque testimony to Swedish military architecture in Germany.
History and architecture
In a storm in 1699, a powder tower exploded and devastated parts of the city and the old armory. A new building was necessary. The plastered building under a hipped roof was erected around 1700 as a nine-axis, two-story building. Charles XII. from Sweden had it built as an arsenal for the Swedish garrison , the plans are attributed to the Swedish fortress builder Erik Dahlberg . The self-supporting ceiling construction without supporting pillars created a very large room with 900 square meters, which is used to store weapons and equipment. The upper floor was accessed via a sloping ramp that horses could use to transport heavy equipment. On each side there is a portal with a rectangular frame. In 1869 the portal risalit on the street side was provided with pilaster strips and a triangular gable , as well as a coat of arms cartouche of the Mecklenburg Gate. From 1993 the former armory was extensively renovated. The building is currently used as Wismar's city library.
