General chemical structure of oils such as mink oil. R 1 , R 2 and R 3 therein are alkyl radicals or alkenyl radicals with a mostly odd number of carbon atoms. Like other natural oils, mink oil is a mixture of tri esters of glycerine .

Mink oil (also: Minkoil or Mustela oil ) is an animal fat from the subcutaneous fatty tissue of mink and martens . It is removed from the pelts intended for fur processing. Since the animals are mainly kept in cages and become fat due to the lack of exercise, public use is controversial.

Mink oil is used as an additive in cosmetic products and in leather care. The high proportion (17–20%) of palmitoleic acid in the triglycerides provides a. for high oxidation stability. The dark yellow raw fat is bleached and deodorized, afterwards it is light yellow. It consists of a mixture of natural glycerides , i.e. glycerine - esters of fatty acids with 14 to 20 carbon atoms. Most of these compounds are triglycerides. Other glycerides are derivatives of the following fatty acids:

Because of the cortisone it contains , the oil is said to have skin and hair care properties.
