Dyson is a global technology company headquartered in Malmesbury . The main products are vacuum cleaners based on the principle of a centrifugal separator . The company was founded in 1991 by James Dyson and currently (as of 2018) employs more than 12,000 people in over 60 countries. In addition to vacuum cleaners, Dyson also produces hair dryers, dehumidifiers, hand dryers and fans . In the 2018 financial year, Dyson achieved sales of approximately £ 4.4 billion (approx. 5 billion euros).

By 2011, Dyson had sold more than 35 million vacuum cleaners worldwide. In 2007 the company was number three in the German vacuum cleaner market with a market share of 17.5 percent.

In January 2019, Dyson announced that it would move its headquarters from Malmesbury to Singapore .

Emergence

In 1980, the British James Dyson applied for his first patent . After developing 5127 prototypes , he built the first bagless vacuum cleaner model with the name G-Force in 1983 . It appeared on the cover of Design Magazine that same year . In 1991, the G-Force was awarded the International Design Fair Prize in Japan . As a result, it was considered a status symbol and a Japanese company sold the model for $ 2,000. With the help of the license income, Dyson founded the Dyson company in June 1993 with development and production in Malmesbury.

In 1993 Dyson produced the first product version of the DC01, a vacuum cleaner that used "dual cyclone technology". It cost around £ 200 and became the UK's best-selling vacuum cleaner in 18 months. More than 500 people work in the Research, Design & Development (RDD) department in Malmesbury . Production was relocated to Malaysia in 2002, primarily to save labor costs . Administration and development remained at the old location. CEO Jim Rowan announced in January 2019 that the company's headquarters would be relocated to Singapore . This step was justified with the increasing importance of Asia for the company.

The company's German headquarters are in Cologne.

In the late 1970s, Dyson observed that the vacuum cleaner models available at the time became clogged and increasingly lost suction. He saw a centrifugal separator in a sawmill and made use of this principle to develop new types of vacuum cleaners. The air is rotated at high speed. The dirt particles that move outwards due to centrifugal force are caught in a separate container. As a result, the Dyson models do not need a bag and therefore cannot clog.

On this basis, Dyson developed the dual cyclone technology . The vacuum cleaners now have two cyclone chambers. The outer cyclone whirls coarse dirt out of the air and the inner cyclone accelerates the air even more so that even finer dust particles are thrown out of the air. However, this technique does not remove particulate matter from the air.

Hand dryer

Dyson developed a hand dryer that was launched in 2006 under the name Airblade . This dryer is characterized by the fact that it does not emit warm air, but instead presses cleaned, ambient air through two fine air slots. Hold both hands down for a few seconds in the device mounted on the wall, which is open at the side, and pull your hands up and out. Water residues on the hands are blown off by the hard air stream. The process only takes a few seconds. Dyson advertises the device with high energy savings compared to conventional hot-air hand dryers, as there is no electrical heating of the air flow. The Airblade is operated with a digital reluctance motor , which uses up to 80 percent less energy compared to conventional warm air hand dryers. The engine output is 1600 watts, the consumption in standby mode is less than one watt.

According to Dyson, HEPA filtration of the Airblade is supposed to remove more than 99.9 percent of bacteria from the air before it hits the hands. The British Royal Institute of Public Health therefore called the Dyson Airblade hand dryer a step forward. More recent studies come to contradicting results: accordingly, the number of germs in the ambient air of a jet-air dryer is 4.7 times that of a conventional heat dryer and 27 times that of paper towels. It should be noted that the studies were initiated by a manufacturer of paper towels and that the rules for washing hands were not adequately observed in the test.

The Dyson Cool product has been on the market since autumn 2009 . The fan works without any visible rotor blades. The air is sucked in by the inner rotor in the base of the device through the lower holes and pressed into the cavity of the upper ring (Dyson calls this technology Air Multiplier). The air exits through a narrow slot on the inside of the ring. This creates a ring-shaped air jet. This is guided over a slope, which is shaped like a wing, to channel the direction of the air flow. In addition, the surrounding air is sucked in as a bypass flow, thereby increasing the air throughput of the fan. The fan with no visible blades is louder than a comparable conventional fan. With the "AM04" and "AM06" there are successor models of the Air Multiplier .

Electric car

In September 2017, Dyson announced plans to launch electric cars in 2020 . Investments of around £ 2.5 billion were planned for this purpose. In October 2018 it was announced that the vehicle would be produced in Singapore. A year later, in October 2019, Dyson abandoned plans to develop it.
