Malmesbury is a town in Wiltshire , England and is located on the River Avon . The population is 5380 (as of 2011).
Malmesbury is the oldest borough in England and is known for its 12th century abbey . The monastery itself is older, however, because King Æthelstan is its patron. Much of the abbey still exists, although Fire and Henry VIII destroyed some parts. The most famous personalities of the abbey from the Middle Ages include the historian William of Malmesbury and the Benedictine monk Eilmer of Malmesbury , who was credited with gliding for the first time in the 11th century.
economy
Although Malmesbury was once a lace making center , the industrial revolution had little impact. In 1877 it was connected to the British railway network; the station was closed in 1960.
Malmesbury is the headquarters of the technology company Dyson , best known for vacuum cleaners.
