GKS 1962 Jastrzębie is a Polish football club from the city of Jastrzębie-Zdrój in the Silesian Voivodeship . The club has played one season in the Ekstraklasa , the highest Polish league.

history

The origins of the club go back to 1932, when the amateur club Jutrzenka was founded. Due to the Second World War , the game operation ended and the club dissolved. In 1948 the association was revived under the name Jastrzębianka and was later renamed LZS Moszczenica , after the district of the same name Moszczenica. In the 1950s, in addition to other local associations, the LZS Jastrzębie Górne association was established from the Jastrzębie Górne district. In 1962, the two associations merged to form Górnik Jas-Mos Jastrzębie , which was renamed GKS Jastrzębie after a few years. The association was supported by the local mines and soon had several departments.

In 1972 the club rose to the 2nd division for the first time , then III division , and with third place achieved the next promotion, to the 1st division . There they were penultimate with only 20 points and had to start again in the third division, but at least they could beat GKS Tychy , who became Polish runner-up a little later. In the cup , after relegation in 1976, they sensationally reached the semi-finals, they won against Wisła Krakau , Legia Warsaw and Stal Rzeszów , until they failed at the first division club FKS Stal Mielec , who became Polish champions that year. In 1979 they managed to rise again, but went straight back down again.

After several years in the third highest division, the promotion finally succeeded again in 1985, this time Jastrzębie was able to realize relegation after promotion. In the 1987/88 season, the club was able to defeat several competitors and ended up in second place at the end of the season, which enabled the relegation to Ekstraklasa against Piast Nowa Ruda. After a goalless draw away, they celebrated a 1-0 win at home in front of 10,000 spectators and made their first and so far only promotion to Poland's top division.

But the competition in the first division was too strong for the promoted team. You could improve during the season, but in the end you were 14th with 19 points, which meant you had to go to the relegation, which was lost to Zawisza Bydgoszcz . After relegation you had to accept another blow with relegation from the first division, but the club got a new stadium.

The recovery did not succeed and the club became weaker. Finally, they fought against relegation and in 2002 had to relegate to the fourth division, which he shared the fate of many former coal mining clubs such as Stal Mielec, Górnik Pszów and Szombierki Bytom . From 1999 to 2005 the club was called Górnik . However, you could improve again and immediately rose again after the descent. In 2006 they even made it into the playoffs for the first division, in which they could not prevail.

In the following season they finally managed with the first place the direct promotion to the first division, in which one could hold for two years. The club has been back in the first division since the 2018/19 season.
