Kawakami Santaro

Kawakami Santarō ( Japanese 川 上 三 太郎 , real name: Kawakami Ikujirō ( 川 上 幾次 郎 ); born January 3, 1891 in Tokyo Prefecture ; † December 26, 1968 ) was a Japanese lyric poet and one of the six great Senryū poets ( Japanese 六 大家 rokudaika ).

Kawakami studied until his graduation in 1910 at the Ōkura commercial school, a forerunner of the Tōkyō University of Economics . After graduating, Kawakami worked in a trading company in Tianjin . He was a student of Inoue Kenkabō ( 井上 剣 花坊 ). He wrote poetry since the age of fourteen, wrote a column on Senryū for the magazine Kokumin Shinbun ( 国民 新聞 ) from 1929 and founded the club Kokumin Shinbunkai . He also founded his own magazine for Senryū poetry. He later worked as an editor for the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper . For his contribution to the artistic development of the country, he was the first Senryū poet in the history of Japan to receive a state award in 1966, the medal with a purple ribbon from the Emperor of Japan. Kawakami published several volumes of poetry. The Senryū 200-nen collection was published in six editions.
