Donald McLeod (also known as Donnie McLeod ; born May 28, 1882 in Laurieston , Falkirk , † October 6, 1917 at Passendale ) was a Scottish football player . The defender has won numerous titles in Scotland with Celtic Glasgow . He was considered a two-footed defensive player with enormous speed.

Career

Donald McLeod, who was born in Laurieston, a district of Falkirk , began his career at FC Stenhousemuir, which was around four kilometers from his hometown. On May 10, 1902, he signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow . With Celtic, McLeod won the Scottish Cup three times and the Scottish Championship four times by 1908 . After a total of 155 competitive games (131 league games, 24 cup games), McLeod moved to English club Middlesbrough in 1908 .

From 1905 to 1906 McLeod completed four international matches for the Scottish national football team , in which he remained without a goal. He made his debut on March 18, 1905 at Celtic Park against Ireland , which was won 4-0. With the Scottish national team he won the British Home Championship 1905/06 as a regular player .

death

A soldier in the British Army's Royal Garrison Artillery in World War I , McLeod was seriously wounded during the Battle of Passendale in Belgium and died of his injuries on October 6, 1917. His grave is in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery in West Flanders Province .

He left behind his wife and three children.

Trivia

In 2000, Donald McLeod's national team shirt, which he wore in the international match against England on April 7, 1906, was auctioned at auction dealer Christie's for £ 1,265.
