Maryhill ( Scots : Maryhill, Scottish Gaelic : Cnoc Mhoire) is a district of the city of Glasgow in Scotland . The north-west of the city is connected to the Scottish railway network with the Maryhill Railway Station .

history

Hew Hill, Lord of Gairbraid, had no male offspring and therefore left his estate to his daughter, Mary Hill (1730-1809).

Maryhill was known as the Venice of the North due to the many canals and the local glass industry .

politics

Maryhill is part of the constituency of Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn in the Scottish Parliament and 21 Maryhill / Kelvin County of Glasgow City Council. Glasgow Maryhill was its own constituency in the British Parliament from 1918 to 2005 . Today it is part of the Glasgow North constituency .

Maryhill Coat of Arms

Maryhill's coat of arms depicts a steamship on an aqueduct of the Forth and Clyde Canal across the River Kelvin , as well as a glass furnace, saw blade, and gear. It was designed in 1885 by Alexander Thomson, a native historian.

In 2015 the population was 73,493.

The charitable organization "Maryhill Integration Network" was founded in 2001 to promote cultural dialogue.

Sports

The Firhill Stadium is located in Maryhill, since 1909 home ground of the Scottish Premiership club's Partick Thistle .
