George Brian Smith (born October 14, 1943 in Edinburgh , † May 13, 2019 ) was a Scottish football referee .

Career

George Smith directed games in the Scottish Football League , including the Scottish Premier Division , in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s . In his career as a referee, he whistled five finals in Scotland: three cup finals and two league cup finals, including the cup final in 1980 between Celtic and the Rangers , which escalated after a storm in Hampden Park by hooligans from the two rival camps and after the riots of 1909 when Second Riot at Hampden went down in Scottish football history.

In addition, Smith whistled numerous games in the European Cup , in the cup winners' competition and in the UEFA Cup . At the soccer World Cup in Italy in 1990 , he led the preliminary round match between Austria and Czechoslovakia in Florence .
