Gilbert Beith

Gilbert Beith (* 1827 ; † July 5, 1904 ) was a Scottish politician of the Liberal Party .

Life

Beith was born the son of the clergyman Alexander Beith . He was a partner in Beith, Stevenson, & Co. , a trading company with offices in Glasgow and Manchester . Furthermore, Beith belonged to the board of directors of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

Political career

For the first time Beith appeared in the general election in 1885 for elections at the national level. He ran in the newly created constituency of Glasgow Central against the unionist John Baird . On election day, Beith received 55% of the vote and consequently received the mandate for the British House of Commons . In the following general election in 1886 , he lost around 12% of his votes against Baird and initially resigned from the lower house. For the next general election in 1892 , Beith applied for the mandate of the constituency of Inverness Burghs . There he prevailed with a difference of only 53 votes against the liberal unionist Robert Finlay , who had held the mandate since 1885. After the end of the electoral term in 1895, Beith did not run and resigned from the House of Commons.
