The Yasushi Inoue Memorial ( Japanese 井上 靖 記念 館 , Inoue Yasushi Kinenkan ) was built in honor of the Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue in his native city Asahikawa . It stands in the vicinity of the museum dedicated to the sculptor Nakahara Teijirō ( 中原 悌 二郎 記念 旭川 市 彫刻 美術館 , Nakahara Teijirō Kinen Asahikawashi Chōkoku Bijutsukan ). The memorial should not be confused with the Yasushi Inoue Museum in Nagaizumi , Shizuoka Prefecture .
Overview
The construction work for the museum lasted from July 7, 1992 to March 13, 1993. The museum has a total area of 5292 m². Admission was free from its opening in July 1993 to April 1, 2006; since then a low admission price has been charged. The most important rooms of the museum are a 109 m² foyer, a 153 m² exhibition room, a 25 m² office and a 28 m² course room. In the foyer there are around 500 volumes on Inoue's literary work, accessible to all visitors. The exhibition room mainly shows parts of the 470 exhibits on Inoue's works, especially those related to his native city Asahikawa, manuscripts, pieces from Inoue's estate, manuscripts and works by artist friends.
Musical events take place regularly in the foyer of the house. In addition, the museum offers specialist lectures on Inoue's work and space for reading groups. For several years now, the museum has also been offering lectures on Japanese literature in general, given by professors from the Hokkaidō College of Education . Temporary exhibitions, such as those of photographs that Inoue took himself, have been announced in the company's own information brochure since April 2001.
