history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the four state normal schools (pedagogical universities of applied sciences). The four were:

  • the first normal school Hokkaidō ( 北海道 第一 師範学校 , Hokkaidō dai-ichi shihan gakkō , in Sapporo, founded in 1877),
  • the Second Normal School Hokkaidō ( 北海道 第二 師範学校 , Hokkaidō dai-ni shihan gakkō , in Hakodate , founded in 1876),
  • the third normal school Hokkaidō ( 北海道 第三 師範学校 , Hokkaidō dai-san shihan gakkō , in Asahikawa , founded in 1923), and
  • the normal youth school Hokkaidō ( 北海道 青年 師範学校 , Hokkaidō his shihan gakkō , in Iwamizawa , founded in 1923).

The college was first called the College of Liberal Arts Hokkaidō ( 北海道 学 芸 大学 , Hokkaidō gakugei daigaku ) and consisted of five branch schools ("campus" since 1993) in Sapporo, Hakodate, Asahikawa, Iwamizawa and Kushiro according to the expanse of the prefecture. In 1966 the college was renamed Hokkaidō College of Education. In 1987 the Sapporo Branch School moved to today's campus. In 1992 she founded the Graduate School (master’s courses).
