Bovolenta began his sports career as an alpine ski racer . From 2003 to 2008 he mainly competed in FIS races . At the end of the 2007/08 season he switched to the freestyle discipline of ski cross. He drove his first World Cup race on January 16, 2008 in Flaine , which he finished in 44th place. From 2008 to 2010 he took part in the European Cup. He took first place in the ski cross discipline classification in the 2009/10 season. He achieved his first top 10 placement in the World Cup on December 19, 2010 with seventh place in San Candido . At the 2011 World Championships in Deer Valley , he came in 12th place. In his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he reached the final and won the silver medal behind his teammate Jean-Frédéric Chapuis .
In the 2014/15 season , which he finished in 14th place in the Ski Cross World Cup, Bovolenta in Val Thorens achieved his best ever World Cup result with fifth place. At the 2015 World Championships on Kreischberg , he came in tenth place. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he achieved his first World Cup podium with third place in San Candido. In the further course of the season he took second place in Idre and won his first World Cup on February 25, 2017 in Sunny Valley . He finished the season in 11th place in the Ski Cross World Cup.
