Adrien Thomasson (born December 10, 1993 in Bourg-Saint-Maurice ) is a French football player of Croatian - Swedish descent. The offensive player has been under contract with the first division team Racing Strasbourg since July 2018 .

Career

Beginnings

Adrien Thomasson was born in Bourg-Saint-Maurice , a municipality in the Savoie department near the Italian border, to a Croatian and a Frenchman of Swedish origin. He therefore has both French and Croatian citizenship. He began his football training in his home country at AS Bourg-Saint-Maurice. In 2004 he switched to the youth team of FC Haute-Tarentaise, but at that time also competed in competitions as a talented ski racer with the parade discipline slalom . In 2008 he switched to the offspring of FC Annecy and stopped racing. During his time at Annecy, he was tested by various larger clubs and finally moved to the U19 team of FC Évian Thonon Gaillard three years after his arrival .

FC Evian Thonon Gaillard

At the end of the 2011/12 season , head coach Pablo Correa promoted Thomasson to the first team. On May 6, 2012 (36th matchday), this changed him in the 2-1 home win against AC Ajaccio in the 73rd minute of play for Ali M'Madi, enabling him to make his debut in the top French division . He was also substituted on in the last two games of the season. In the next season 2012/13 he played regularly in the reserve team, which played in the fifth-rate Championnat de France Amateur 2 and scored nine goals in 24 league games.

On August 29, 2013 Thomasson moved to the third division OC Vannes for the entire 2013/14 season . He made his debut on September 7, 2013 (5th matchday) in the 2-0 away defeat against Racing Strasbourg . He quickly established himself as a regular at the relegation-threatened club and met for the first time for the Vénètes just two weeks later in a 3-0 home win against Paris FC . On January 31, 2014 (19th matchday) he scored a hat trick in a 4-0 home win against ES Uzès Pont du Gard . During this season he scored eight goals in 27 league appearances.

After his return to FC Évian Thonon Gaillard, he made his breakthrough into the starting XI there in December 2014. On January 10, 2015 (20th match day) he scored his first league goal for Évian in a 1-1 draw against Stade Rennes . But even good performances by the young Thomasson in the second half of the 2014/15 season could not prevent the club from relegating to the second division . He ended the season with two goals and seven assists in 21 league games and his rapid breakthrough was seen as a surprise by many experts.

FC Nantes

On June 9, 2015, Adrien Thomasson moved to FC Nantes for a transfer fee of 800,000 euros and thus remained in Ligue 1 in contrast to FC Évian. At Canaris , he was seen as a regular in the attacking midfield and stood with his League debut on August 8, 2015 (1st matchday) in a 1-0 home win against EA Guingamp in the starting lineup. Thomasson also played frequently on both sides of the wing in the following weeks and scored his first goal on October 23 (11th matchday) in this position in the 2-0 away win against SM Caen . In his first season at FC Nantes, he played 34 league games, in which he scored twice and prepared five more goals.

In the following 2016/17 season , he gradually lost his regular place and often played more defensively than in his previous career. On December 3, 2016 (16th matchday) he flew in the 0-2 away defeat against EA Guingamp in the 71st minute of the game with " smooth red ". After he got into the relegation battle with Nantes in the first half of the season, both Thomasson's performances and those of the club under the discontinued Sérgio Conceição in December 2016 improved significantly in the second half . He finished the season with two goals and as many assists, which he was able to collect in 29 league games.

After Conceição left for FC Porto , his successor Claudio Ranieri continued the upward trend of the West French in the next 2017/18 season. Thomasson was one of Ranieri's permanent staff on the offensive and the club was always in the top 6 between October 2017 and March 2018, which guarantees participation in international business. After a weak end of the season, they clearly missed this with a ninth place. Thomasson was used in 36 league games and scored five goals in these and prepared four more goals.

Racing Strasbourg

Since his contract expired on June 30, 2018, Thomasson was able to make the free transfer to league rivals Racing Strasbourg on June 14, with whom he signed a three-year contract, which he took on on July 1, 2018. He made his debut on August 12, 2018 (1st matchday) in a 2-0 away win against Girondins Bordeaux . On October 20 (matchday 10) he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 home win against AS Monaco . At Racing he established himself as a regular on the offensive and ended the 2018/19 season with five goals and eight assists, which he achieved in 34 league appearances. On March 30, 2019, he and his club won the final of the Coupe de la Ligue against EA Guingamp 4-1 after the penalty shoot-out . Thomasson successfully recovered his penalty.

In the following 2019/20 season he maintained his form and was the top scorer of his team with Ludovic Ajorque until the season was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic .
