Le Bois is a commune Déléguée in the French commune of Grand-Aigueblanche of 400 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

location

Le Bois is located at 669  m , about 46 km east-southeast of the prefecture of Chambéry , 84 km south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 69 km east-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village is on the banks of the Isère in the historic province of Tarentaise . The entire northern half of Le Bois is surrounded by the neighboring municipality of Aigueblanche . Other neighboring communities are Salins-Fontaine in the south and south-east, Saint-Jean-de-Belleville in the south and Les Avenchers-Valmorel in the south-west.

topography

The area of the 5.55 km 2 area of the Commune déléguée covers a section of the Isère Valley between Moûtiers and Albertville and extends exclusively on the left flank of the valley. The Isère, which flows in a north-westerly direction here, draws the border to the Commune déléguée Aigueblanche. From its left bank in the northern part of the Commune déléguée the valley flank rises only moderately and offers space for the settlement area of Le Bois. In the southern part, on the other hand, the valley is constricted for a length of about one kilometer into a gorge, the Gorges du Ponserand . At the bottom of the gorge is the Barrage des Échelles d'Hannibal . From there the floor of the Commune déléguée rises steeply and protrudes into the Lauzière massif. On the slopes of the 2342  m high Crève-Tête , the municipality reaches its highest elevation at 1760  m . Two mountain streams drain this slope towards the Isère, the Nant Noir along the northern border to the Commune déléguée Aigueblanche and the Sècheron , which gradually flows through the individual hamlets. Except for the settlements and their immediate surroundings, the area of the Commune déléguée is forested.

Structure of the Commune déléguée

In addition to the actual town center, the Commune déléguée Le Bois also includes several hamlet settlements , including:

  • Le Crêt ( 720  m ) northwest of the town center at the same height,
  • Le Bétaix ( 565  m ) halfway between the town center and Isère,
  • Les Cours (around 500  m ) on the banks of the Isère opposite Aigueblanche.

history

The Tarentaise was already settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. Le Bois was first mentioned in a document in 1184 as ecclesia de bosco . The name already had the meaning of "forest". In the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime , Le Bois was a small dominion.

In the middle of the 19th century, the place had to struggle with landslides and mudslides along the Sècheron , after the municipality was largely cleared and the wood was sold to the salt pans of Moûtiers. From 1887 onwards it was reforested with state aid.

The municipality of Le Bois merged with Aigueblanche and Saint-Oyen to form the Commune nouvelle Grand-Aigueblanche on January 1, 2019 . Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. It belonged to the canton of Moûtiers in the Arrondissement of Albertville . The community was a member of the Vallées d'Aigueblanche community association .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Nicolas dates from the 17th century and is a single building visible from afar on a rocky promontory above the town center.

With 398 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Le Bois was one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined slightly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 279 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the 1980s. The local residents of Le Bois are called les Boitais (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Bois was a predominantly agricultural village. Viticulture was particularly important . In contrast, today there are various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is not far from the main artery of the Tarentaise, the two-lane national road N90 on the opposite bank of the Isère with access in Aigueblanche. This merges into the A430 motorway down the valley at Albertville . The department road D95 climbs up the side valley of the Morel from Aigueblanche and connects the individual districts with one another. As the main access to the Valmorel ski area , it is exposed to increased traffic in winter. The nearest train station on the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line is in Moûtiers. Chambéry-Savoie (distance 85 km) and Geneva (126 km) are possible airports in the region .

Together with Aigueblanche, Le Bois is the center of a system of underground hydropower plants . The Barrage des Échelles d'Hannibal , built in 1954, initially only supported a hydropower plant, but since 1974 it has also served as the lower reservoir of a pumped storage power plant . The hydroelectric power plant uses the slope of about 200 meters between the valley of the Isere and the south-western valley of the Arc in the Maurienne by a part of the discharge amount of the Isère by a 12 km long pressure line under the Grand Arc to an underground power plant at Randens is diverted . In the mountain flank above the dam is the Usine éléctrique souterraine de Sainte-Hélène de la Coche , which is connected to a collecting basin on the southern edge of Le Bois via a pressure pipe with a 900 m gradient. This reservoir ( Barrage et retenue de la Coche ) is also used as a pump storage.

There is a state primary school ( école élémentaire ) in Le Bois .
