José Antonio Pavón y Jiménez

José Antonio Pavón y Jiménez (born April 22, 1754 in Casatejada , Province of Cáceres , † 1844 in Madrid ) was a Spanish natural scientist (geography, physics, chemistry, mineralogy, pharmacy, botany). Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Pav. "; the joint authorship of Ruiz López and Pavón y Jiménez is abbreviated in botanical literature as “ Ruiz & Pav. ”.

Live and act

Pavón participated in the King Carlos III. initiated the first expedition to the viceroyalty of Peru 1777–1788. The French doctor and botanist Joseph Dombey and the painter Isidro Gálvez were also there until 1785 . Together with Hipólito Ruiz Lopez , he traveled to Chile , Peru and other South American countries from 1779 to 1788 . Pavón did not see his scientific endeavors sufficiently appreciated; he was therefore very unhappy. He even had to wait until 1834 for an appointment to the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid. He was 80 years old then!

Honors

The plant genus Pavonia Cav. from the Mallow family (Malvaceae) was named in his honor.
