There had been a suspension bridge here since 1835 using the Seguin method, with two openings of approx. 80 m each. The roadway consisted of tightly knit wooden planks.

The bridge was to plans by Claude Bioret and construction company Joyat & mountain built in the years 1923 to 1925 partly on the old abutments and is one of the early reinforced concrete - arch bridges in France. The three arch elements of the same size span a length of 180 meters, the span of the arches is 58 meters. The opening took place on August 23, 1925.

During the Second World War , the eastward arch of the bridge was blown up by the retreating German troops. During the reconstruction there were difficulties with the procurement of materials. Therefore, American reinforcement iron was partly used.
