Paul Simmel

Paul Simmel (born June 27, 1887 in Spandau , † March 24, 1933 in Berlin ) was a German painter and caricaturist .

Life

Simmel grew up in Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and initially trained as a locksmith at his father's request . In 1909 he began studying at the Berlin Art Academy , which he continued in Munich and Paris . After the end of the First World War he returned to Berlin and was employed as a caricaturist at the Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung (sic!), But also drew caricatures for the Berliner Morgenpost , Zeitbilder (weekly supplement of the Vossische Zeitung), the Ulk and the Lustigen Sheets of the publishing house of Dr. Otto Eysler . His drawings also appeared regularly in book form. He also illustrated numerous books by other authors.

Simmel could make a living from his drawing skills. He was married twice. When he became seriously ill and the doctors could no longer help him, he put an end to his life himself. He bequeathed his fortune to the war blind .

As popular as Heinrich Zille during his lifetime , with whom he is often compared, his fame gradually faded, although a few selected volumes were still published in both the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR .
