The New Twelve Apostles Cemetery is a Protestant cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg that was laid out in the second third of the 19th century . In the 21st century, Islamic burials can also be performed in this cemetery .

history

The Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery on Königsweg, today's Kolonnenstrasse, was founded in 1864 as the first community cemetery . Since the burial area in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery was no longer sufficient in 1882 and no expansion was possible, it was necessary to purchase another cemetery. This is how the New Twelve Apostles Cemetery was created on Werführung Weg with an area of around five hectares . The first burial took place in June 1883. The simple brick cemetery chapel was built around 1890 based on a design by Paul Egeling , who found his final resting place in the churchyard. The chapel is now a listed building .

Like the Old St. Matthew Cemetery , the New Twelve Apostles Cemetery was also affected by Albert Speer's plans to transform Berlin into the world capital Germania . In January 1939, the central and southern part of the cemetery - 26,000 m² in size - was cleared for the construction of the southern station . The "de-dedication" affected two thirds of the entire area, as a result of which the churchyard lost considerable substance. The evacuation was to be completed by October 1939, and the graves of 7,000 dead were then added to the Stahnsdorf cemetery . A transfer to the remainder of the New Twelve Apostles Cemetery was not planned, as this should also be cleared later. The beginning of the war in September 1939 stopped the further destruction of the cemetery.

In 1960, new office and staff rooms and a waiting hall were built in the churchyard. The area cleared back then is now part of the Berlin city motorway .

Since many guest workers moved to Berlin in the 1960s, most of whom were Muslims , the need arose to create burial facilities in this city for those who died here. These include, among other things, the orientation of the graves to Mecca and a burial without a coffin, in which the corpse is wrapped in linen cloth. The New Twelve Apostles Cemetery and four other Berlin burial sites ( Südwestfriedhof Stahnsdorf , Landschaftsfriedhof Gatow , Friedhof Ruhleben , Friedhof Columbiadamm and Alter St. Thomas-Friedhof ) created these possibilities.
