Location and history

Bell tower

With the In den Kisseln cemetery, the Spandau district has a 62-hectare site in the Falkenhagener Feld district . It has been expanded several times in the last few decades, the last time from 1964 to 1972. Already at that time people were thinking about a new system, but the plans became obsolete with the construction of the Berlin Wall . In 1969, therefore, plans began to establish another cemetery on the former sewage fields in Gatow. The Gatow landscape cemetery was opened on October 27, 1982 after a construction period of six years. Soon after, however, it was found that the demand was not as high as expected. In order to expand the cemetery for further groups, an Islamic grave field was set up on October 3, 1988 , on which the grave sites are oriented towards Mecca . These areas were expanded again in 2012. 8000 m² were redesigned, so that around 900 election graves were created. Since October 11, 1994, the dead of the Greek Orthodox faith can also be buried in a separate part.

If you enter the site through the main entrance, the first thing you notice is the detached bell tower. There is a commemorative plaque for the painter and graphic artist Wolfgang Peuker . On the right hand side is the chapel with a capacity of 126 seats. It was built in 1982 and 1983 by the Spandau Building Department and has three bronze bells.
