from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kadir Nurman (* 1933 in Anatolia ; † October 24, 2013 in Berlin ) was a Turkish restaurateur who, according to the Association of Turkish Doner Kebab Manufacturers in Europe (ATDID), is considered the inventor of the doner kebab in Germany.

Life

Nurman comes from Anatolia and grew up in Istanbul. He came to Stuttgart in 1960 at the age of 26 as a trained businessman. In 1966 he moved to West Berlin and worked as a fitter for printing machines. In 1972 Nurman is said to have sold the first kebab at Berlin Zoologischer Garten station . At that time, the flatbread only contained minced meat from veal and lamb and onions and some salad. According to his own statements, he introduced the kebab in bread as a reaction to the change in eating habits in Germany's major cities. At that time the so-called fast food had come into fashion.

He died of lung cancer in the Havelhöhe Hospital in Berlin-Spandau and was buried in the Muslim section of the Gatow landscape cemetery.

The Association of Turkish Doner Kebab Manufacturers in Europe recognized Nurman in 2011 for his life's work.

In addition to Nurman, Mehmet Aygün is also considered the inventor of kebab in Berlin .
