- In the Eastern Roman Empire , the rebellion of the army master Vitalian against Emperor Anastasios I broke out from Thrace . The people are dissatisfied with the emperor's religious policy, which is increasingly leaning towards monophysitism . Vitalian seeks the support of the Huns and the Bulgarians in his struggle for the throne of Byzantium . In autumn he inflicts a crushing defeat on the Byzantine army at Acris on the Black Sea and marches towards Constantinople.
