Timothy I (Constantinople)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Timotheus I (Greek Τιμόθεος Α´ ; † April 5, 517 ) was Patriarch of Constantinople (511-517).

Life

His year of birth and origin are not known. Timotheus was a simple priest in Hagia Sophia in Constantinople .

In 511 he was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople by Emperor Anastasios I , one day after the deposition of his predecessor Macedonius II. Timotheus is said to have intensively requested his deposition in letters to other bishops. Timotheus did not recognize the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon , so Patriarch Flavian II of Antioch and Elias of Jerusalem sought contact with him.

Timotheus took action against supporters of the Council of Chalcedon during his tenure and had them deposed, banished and condemned.
