Hormisdas (also: Hormisda ; * in Frosinone , Campagna Romana , Latium ; † August 6, 523 in Rome ) was Bishop of Rome and Pope of Rome from July 20, 514 until his death .

Live and act

Saint Hormisdas was a widower and archdeacon of his predecessor Symmachus when he was elected Roman bishop. His son later also became Bishop of Rome as Silverius .

One of the first concerns of the bishop was to remove the last traces of the Laurentian schism from Rome and to return the remaining apostates to the church. Most of his pontificate he dealt with the healing of the schism ( Akakian schism ) , which had existed between East and West since 484 and was based on the excommunication of Acacius of Constantinople , who was accused of communion with Monophysites . 519 one was using the Creed , the formula of Hormisdas (formula Hormisdae), the schism ended and the churches of Rome and Constantinople Opel reunited. Hormisdas had sent the letter in 515 to the Patriarch Timotheos I , and in 519 his successor John II Kappadokes accepted it.

There has also been an exchange of letters between Hormisdas and Patriarch Epiphanios of Constantinople , the successor of John Kappadokes, which deals with the final settlement of the schism.

He is the patron saint of stable boys and grooms , as well as of the city of Frosinone . Catholic feast day is August 6th .
