Léman department
Léman is a former French department with the capital Geneva .
It was built in 1798 from the following areas:
- the territory of the Republic of Geneva annexed by France ,
- the Pays de Gex landscape from the Ain department ,
- the northern part of the Mont-Blanc department ( Bonneville , Cluses , Thonon-les-Bains ),
- from 1800 also with the Mont-Blanc massif, the cantons of Chamonix, Saint-Gervais, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Megève, Flumet and Sallanches.
Since 1800 the department was divided into three arrondissements:
- Geneva
- Bonneville,
- Thonon.
Geneva regained its independence on December 31, 1813, since May 19, 1815 (enlarged by six municipalities in the Pays de Gex region) as a member of the Confederation .
