The Dent d'Oche is a 2,221 meter high mountain in the Chablais massif, which in turn is located in the Savoy Alps, part of the Western Alps . It is the highest point in the commune of Bernex in the French department of Haute-Savoie . The summit offers a view of almost the entire Lake Geneva , as well as the French-Swiss western Alps.
history
Origin of the name
Literally translated, "Dent d'Oche" means tooth of the good pasture . In fact, cows graze the grassy areas up to an altitude of around 1,900 meters in summer.
First ascent
Climbing the summit via the easy east-west route may have already existed before alpine historical records, the first mention is found in the memoirs of Sir Samuel Romilly, who climbed the mountain in 1781. The first ascent of the north face took place in June 1925 by the businessman François Jacquier from Evian with his guides Joseph Ravanel , Arthur Ravanel and Camille Ravanel.
Location and surroundings
The Dent d'Oche is located south of Lake Geneva, southeast of Évian-les-Bains . From almost the entire south coast of Lake Geneva you can see the striking peaks of the Dent d'Oche, which is why the mountain is well known in the region. In the immediate vicinity is the Château d'Oche , a little further away the Cornettes de Bise . South of the summit is the small lake Lac de la Case at around 1780 meters. There is a chair lift not far from Dent d'Oche.
height
In travel guides and tourism publications, the height is often given as 2,222 meters. Officially, however, the height of the summit is 2,221 meters. It is the northernmost two-thousand-meter peak in France.
Routes to the summit
The ascent of the Dent d'Oche is one of the most difficult in the Chablais massif. On the last 350 m there are some secured climbing areas to be overcome. The main ascent route runs from the "La Fétiuère" inn at an altitude of around 1,200 m over the western ridge of the summit. The Refuge de la Dent d'Oche mountain hut, managed by the French Alpine Club, is located at 2,066 meters . The ascent takes about three hours, the descent about two hours, the route is about eight kilometers long. There is an alternative ascent route from the southeast side, which is a little less frequented, but the difficulty is comparable. Both paths meet at a cowshed at around 1,620 meters. The alpine hike is rated T5 (demanding alpine hiking) on the SAC hiking scale . The eastern rock is equipped with anchors for climbing ropes on several routes.
Flora and fauna
Numerous chamois live on the Dent d'Oche . The tree line is around 1,600 meters, above which alpine mountain meadows dominate.
