The Marnot, a tributary of the Hermance

The Hermance is a 13 km long tributary of Lake Geneva , which in the French department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes springs and in its lower reaches the border of the Swiss canton of Geneva is.

course

The Hermance has its source in the eastern part of the hamlet Tholomaz , in the French commune of Loisin . It flows first in a westerly direction through Tholomaz and then reaches the municipality of Veigy-Foncenex . At Veigy it takes up the left tributary Tuernant . The Hermance now runs in a north-westerly direction and, after Veigy, forms the border between the two states for the last six kilometers. At the same time, it delimits the communities of Veigy-Foncenex (F) and Anières (CH) on their north-eastern course, only to then form the border between Chens-sur-Léman (F) and Hermance (CH) a little later . Here, after the mouth of the short Marnot brook , it flows again in a northerly direction and takes up the Chamburaz brook, which flows into the French side, near the center of Hermance , and only a little later it flows into the Petit Lac (small lake) of Lake Geneva to flow.

nature and environment

A cross-border project has been going on since 2008 to renature the Hermance in order to limit the effects of floods, reduce erosion on the banks and create a natural delta. The project should be completed in June 2015.

history

In 1815 it was decided at the Congress of Vienna that the Hermance should form part of the border between the canton of Geneva and the Duchy of Savoy . From 1860 it became the border with France. During the Second World War , between 1940 and 1944, it was an important secret passage between Geneva and France.
