route

The start took place in Bologna . After 90 kilometers the highest point of the route, the Passo Brasimone (896 m above sea level), was reached. The last 50 kilometers or so were carried out on a circuit around Santuario della Madonna di San Luca . One lap was 9.2 kilometers long and had to be driven five times. The last two kilometers of each lap led uphill to the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca.

Race course

Immediately after the start of the race, eight drivers pulled away from the field. There were among others Jacopo Mosca (Italy / Wilier Triestina), Fabien Doubey (France / Wanty), Nicolas Edet (France / Cofidis) and Francois Bidard (France / AG2R). The escape group had a lead of no more than eight minutes. All outliers were put off the field 20 kilometers from the finish. Four kilometers later, the Italian Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) attacked. Before the final climb he had a lead of 35 seconds.

In his pursuit, one of the co-favorites fell on the win and last year's winner , Esteban Chaves (Columbia / Orica). Chaves hit the asphalt and remained motionless in a meadow about 4 kilometers from the finish. Later examinations revealed that he had broken his right shoulder blade.

In the end, Visconti won at the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca with a good 12 seconds lead over his compatriot and team mate Vincenzo Nibali , who was able to break away from the chasing group. Rigoberto Urán (Colombia / Cannondale Drapac) went third, 15 seconds behind.
