Attractions

Caravaca is known as a place of pilgrimage . In 1998 the Pope gave the city the privilege of celebrating a Holy Year every seven years . About one million pilgrims came to Caravaca in the holy year 2010 . The cross of Caravaca is venerated , a cross relic that is kept in the basilica above the city, which also dominates the cityscape.

The origin of this pilgrimage goes back to the 13th century. According to tradition, in 1232 the Archbishop of Jerusalem, Robert, brought with him a relic of the true cross of Christ . According to a more ornate version of this tradition, the Moorish ruler Abú Zeid was converted to Christianity when two angels miraculously lowered the Cross of Caravaca from heaven during the celebration of the Feast of the Finding of the Cross, so that a priest imprisoned in the castle could celebrate mass.

There are also numerous churches and the El Templete building in the old town, which is well worth seeing . Two kilometers away are the Fuentes de Marqués, several springs in charming surroundings.

In La Encarnación, a few kilometers from Caravaca, there is a whole complex of important archaeological sites, including temples, a Roman quarry , Arab remains and a cave with remains of Neanderthals .

Derived from the miraculous appearance of the cross on May 3rd, 1232, a festival with processions and folklore is celebrated in Caravaca de la Cruz every year from May 1st to 5th .
