The cross of Caravaca de la Cruz, also known as Lignum crucis ("wood of the cross"). The reliquary is 17 cm high, the two crossbars 7 and 10 cm long.

The Cross of Caravaca is a relic in Caravaca de la Cruz, Spain . The city has derived its name from this relic since the Middle Ages, to which miracles are attributed.

Associated with the relic is a pilgrimage to Caravaca that dates back to the 13th century. According to tradition, in 1232 the Archbishop of Jerusalem, Robert, brought with him a relic of the true cross of Christ . According to a more ornate version of this tradition, the Moorish ruler Abú Zeid was converted to Christianity when two angels miraculously lowered the Cross of Caravaca from heaven during the celebration of the Feast of the Finding of the Cross, so that a priest imprisoned in the castle would celebrate Holy Mass with a view of the cross could celebrate.

In Caravaca de la Cruz, on May 3rd, the earlier date of the Feast of the Finding of the Cross in the Catholic Church , the patronage festival takes place with a procession , every ten years a Holy Year is proclaimed in honor of the Cross of Caravaca.

Derived from the Cross of Caravaca is a certain type of cross, which is also known as the Caravaca cross . Caravaca crosses had been common in different parts of Europe since the 16th century, primarily as a protection against cholera and other diseases. The cross has two crossbars, and sometimes two angels are depicted under the lower crossbar , derived from the miraculous appearance of the cross in Caravaca de la Cruz in 1232 .

Since 16./17. In the 19th century, Caravaca crosses first spread in Spain and then in other parts of Europe. In Poland , the cross became popular in the late 18th century.
