Today mainly peaches and olives are harvested. Small traders, craftsmen and service companies of all kinds have settled in the village. There are several holiday homes (casas rurales) .

history

The oldest finds that attest to the presence of humans in the region are dated to the Neolithic (around 3500 BC). Small Iberian , Carthaginian , Roman , Visigoth or Byzantine finds have not yet been made. In the years after 711 the area was overrun by the Moors ; around the year 825 there was already a fortress (Castillo de los Peñascales) . The place name Rikut has been handed down from this time . After the end of the Caliphate of Córdoba that arose Taifa Kingdom Murcia, which after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the region by Castilian troops under Alfonso X in 1243 in a Christian kingdom was converted, which, however closely with the Crown of Castile was intertwined . The region of the Valle de Ricote was given to the Order of Santiago , but from 1296 to 1304 it came temporarily under Aragonese rule and in 1477 briefly under the rule of the Nasrid rulers of Granada . At the beginning of the 16th century, many Moors ( moriscos ) left the country; others stayed and were not until the beginning of the 17th century by decrees of Philip III. or his First Minister, the Duke of Lerma , expelled from the country, which had negative demographic and economic consequences for the region.

Attractions

  • Only sparse remains of the former Moorish fortress (hisn) can be seen.
  • The basilical Iglesia de San Sebastián comes from the beginning of the 18th century; a previous building erected over a former mosque had to give way. The portal zone of the church, made of natural stones, is surrounded by brickwork.
  • The Casa de la Encomienda de Santiago is hidden at the end of a side street; it was the local seat of the Order of Santiago. Its interior houses a chapel, among other things. The order's archives were destroyed in the 1930s.
  • The Palacio de Llamas was completed in 1702. The symmetrical baroque facade shows a central portal with a balcony and two equally high, but barred side window fronts. Except for the corner stones, the rest of the building is plastered and whitewashed. The building now serves as the town hall (ayuntamiento) and so the first floor of the staircase can normally be accessed.
