history

The church was built by the Franciscans in the Kingdom of Hungary under Ludwig I around 1441 . With the arrival of the Reformation in 1540, the church was used for Lutheran services, after the Counter-Reformation around 1580 the Franciscans returned in 1588. In 1672 the Paulines took over the monastery with the church. In 1708 the image of the Blessed Mother is said to have wept bloody tears. The church was then consecrated to Mary, the previous patronage is unclear. The Paulines looked after the church until 1786, when the monastery was dissolved by the reforms of Emperor Joseph II . In 1963 the church was declared a monument . Since 1990 the Paulines have taken over the monastery and the care of the church again. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the tears of the merciful image of Our Lady, Pope Benedict XVI. on July 19, 2008 the church was raised to the rank of minor basilica.

architecture

The monastery church is now in the middle of the city, the baroque monastery is on the left. It was built as a single-nave church with a slender steeple above the entrance in the late Gothic style, but the interior was significantly redesigned in 1578 and 1718. The choir ends with a polygonal apse , which is dominated by the baroque high altar that extends into the vault and in the center of which it presents the image of the Virgin.
