Life

Early life and the Holocaust

As the son of Markéta and Karel Brady and brother of Hana Brady George Brady spent his childhood in the interwar period in Czechoslovakia . After Nazi Germany established the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in March 1939 , his Jewish family suffered from increasing restrictions and persecution by the German occupiers. In 1941, Brady's parents were separated from their children and held in prisons and concentration camps . They died in Auschwitz before the end of World War II . George and Hana stayed with an aunt and a Catholic uncle for several months . Since he was not a Jew, the couple was a "privileged" mixed marriage and the aunt could not be deported. The children were deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp not far from Prague in May 1942 , where George shared the L417 children's home with around forty boys, including Petr Ginz , Yehuda Bacon and Kurt Kotouc .

George and Hana stayed in Theresienstadt until 1944, when they were sent to Auschwitz in separate transports - George in September to the labor camp and Hana in October, where she was murdered in the gas chamber as soon as she arrived . George was sent to the Gleiwitz I subcamp , where he worked on repairing damaged railroad cars. Brady escaped during a death march to Germany in January 1945, and Auschwitz was liberated that same month.

Brady lived from the plumbing trade , in which he had been trained in Theresienstadt. In early 1951, he and another Holocaust survivor founded a plumbing shop in Toronto and employed 200 people. He married and had three sons and a daughter, Lara Hana Brady. He lived in Toronto.

On October 28, 2016 (State Day), he was to receive an award from Czech President Miloš Zeman for his lifelong campaign to commemorate the Holocaust. But after Brady's nephew , the Czech Minister of Culture Daniel Herman , met the Tibetan exiled leader Dalai Lama against the will of the president , the president decided against the award of the honor so as not to strain relations with China.

Brady received numerous recognitions in the Czech Republic, including from the House of Representatives , from the cities of Prague and Brno and from the University of Olomouc .
