Ginz was the son of a Czech Jewish father Ota (1896 in Ždánice u Kouřimi –1976 in Kirjat Jam , also Otto) and a Czech mother Marie (1898 in Čibuz near Hradec Králové –1990 in Israel , née Dolanská, later Mirjam or Miriam), who met at an Esperanto congress in 1921 , which is why Petr and his sister Eva spoke Esperanto in addition to Czech . He grew up in Prague and was imprisoned in the Theresienstadt ghetto in October 1942 during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia . He was a talented draftsman and wrote stories and novels based on Jules Verne . At the age of 14 he became the first and only editor of the youth magazine Vedem in the Theresienstadt ghetto. For many editions he was an author, editor and editor rolled into one. On September 28, 1944, he was deported from Theresienstadt to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, where he was murdered in a gas chamber .

In 2003, Petr's sister Chava Pressburger (born in 1930 as Eva Ginzová), who had survived the Holocaust, received news from Prague that parts of his diaries had been found there in an attic in Modřany . In them, Petr describes the increasing restriction of the rights of Jews and the beginning deportation of Jewish neighbors during the German occupation in Prague between September 19, 1941 and August 9, 1942 in a precise and distant manner. The German edition of Ginz's diary was first published in 2006 published together with linocuts, drawings and six poems and stories from the time in the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

One of his drawings, which shows a lunar landscape, became famous in January 2003 because the Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon took a copy of it on board the Columbia space shuttle . On this space flight, the Columbia was destroyed on February 1, 2003 when it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, with all astronauts dying. In memory of Ginz and Ramon, another copy of the drawing by Andrew Jay Feustel was taken into space as part of ISS Expedition 56 , and on Yom haScho'a 2018 he sent a video message from the International Space Station .

The asteroid 50413 was his honor Petrginz baptized.
