The Česká pošta ( German  " Czech Post " ) is the postal company in the Czech Republic. It was founded as a state-owned company in 1993 after the partition of Czechoslovakia and is currently in the process of being converted into a joint stock company. The Post maintains a postal museum in Prague with an exhibition of stamps. The branch in Vyšší Brod is home to a permanent exhibition on the postal system.

With around 3,400 agencies and around 10 million inhabitants, the company currently operates one of the densest post office networks in Europe and is one of the largest employers in the Czech Republic with 29,000 employees .

Česká pošta was established on January 1, 1993 after the division of the former Czechoslovak Post Office ( Československá pošta ) on December 31, 1992 and has been operated as a state company ever since. Although an automatic letter sorting system was introduced in the founding year, the company's first decade was largely dominated by the past:

While the neighboring European countries had mostly privatized their postal companies by the turn of the millennium, liberalized the market for postal services and adapted parcel shipping to the Internet mail order business, a study by the Czech Telecommunications Office in 2006 complained about short opening times, long queues and an overall lack of customer orientation.

One of the reasons was seen as the monopoly of Česká pošta in letter delivery, which was restricted to 350 grams in 2000 and to deliveries of up to 100 grams when the Czech Republic joined the EU and has only been valid for letters up to 50 grams since 2006. The Czech postal market is to be fully liberalized by 2013. In the mid-2000s, the Czech government therefore tried to convert the state-owned company into a joint stock company and made several attempts to streamline the branch structure and to partially replace existing service offerings with online services:

Mailbox

In 2008, for example, it was proposed to close 180 of the 3,387 branches at the time and to use mobile customer advisors instead, especially in rural areas. The proposal sparked massive protests in the population and was supported by local mayors and consumer protection organizations, so that the previous director-general Karel Kratina resigned under pressure from the public. His successor Petr Sedláček withdrew the planned closings and promised to convert the post into a joint stock company as customer-friendly as possible. In fact, the restructuring of the company was slowed down after the protests, but the conversion to a public company had to be postponed again and again. The last date mentioned for this was September 1, 2009, a new date is currently not known, although with a view to the German and Austrian neighbors, the country's politics repeatedly bring possible income from an IPO into play.

The Česká pošta was therefore under considerable profit pressure, which already led in 2009 that Sedláček had to resign due to declining profits and was replaced by Marcela Hrdá in January 2010. This attracted some attention with the plan not to extend the cooperation with the Czech-Slovak Commercial Bank (ČSOB) , which ran until 2015 , and to set up a postal savings bank as part of a large-scale corporate reform. As a further innovation, "on-demand" mail delivery was planned after work, but Hrdá did not find the support of those responsible in politics and was dismissed in February 2011. Petr Zatloukal was initially named provisionally as successor, and in May 2011 he was appointed the official general director of Česká pošta.

In 2014, the Sobotka government decided to refrain from transforming it into a stock corporation and to leave the Post as a state-owned company.

Roman Knap has been the new General Director since the end of April 2018. He replaces Martin Elkán, who was dismissed in January 2018 due to a lack of plans to further develop the Post.

Others

The company is the current operator of the National Postal Museum in Prague, which was founded in 1918, but will transfer this responsibility to the Czech Ministry of Culture, which is already responsible for the curatorial affairs of the institution, as part of the privatization process.

The highest of the currently 3,400 post offices of Česká pošta is the branch on the Śnieżka , built in 2007, at an altitude of 1,500 meters.

Česká pošta was entrusted with carrying out the first joint census of the European Union : from March 7th to 25th, 14,000 employees distributed almost 17 million registration forms on behalf of the Post.
