The Czech Post Office on Snezka is a new building built in 2007 on the summit of Snezka in the Giant Mountains at an altitude of 1600  m nm , making it the highest building in the Czech Republic .

History of the post offices on the Schneekoppe

Also on the Schneekoppe was an old kuk telegraphic station, which probably came from the first half of the 19th century and was mentioned for the first time in 1875. From 1899 to 1938 it served as a post office. After 1948 it served as a kiosk in a nearby “Česká bouda” (Bohemian hut ) or as a storage room. Between 1993 and 1995 it was reconstructed and again served as a post office combined with a kiosk. After the new post office opened in 2007, the old post office was dismantled and rebuilt south of Prague.

New building

The new post office is located where the Bohemian Baude used to be. It was built in 1868, closed in 1990 due to dry rot and dismantled in 2004 - except for the cellar.

It is a modern, two-story building made of wood, steel and glass that rests on only 12 steel feet. The construction method without an actual foundation has the advantage of a light construction that does without concrete, mortar or other cement-containing substances and in particular also takes account of the requirements of nature conservation.

The upper floor is surrounded all around with glazed outer walls, which are protected by hydraulically operated wooden shutters. Depending on the weather, the appearance of the building can be completely changed with this blind system. Above the upper floor there is a flat roof with a floor plan of 17 x 4.5 meters that can be used as a viewing platform. The basement, in which the utilities are located, is housed in the former cellar of the Bohemian Baude.
