Skjeldal, who started for Bulken IL , ran his first of 15 individual World Cup races in Oslo in March 1991 , which he finished classically in eighth place over 50 km. The following year he won the Kangaroo Hoppet . In the 1992/93 season he came in five World Cup appearances, twice in the top ten. He achieved his only podium finish in the classic world cup with second place over 50 km in Oslo and his best overall result at the end of the season with 20th place in the overall world cup. He completed his last World Cup race in February 1995 in Oslo, which he finished classically in 43rd place over 50 km.
At Norwegian championships he won 1991 and 1997 with the relay of Bulken IL. In 1993, 1994 and 1996 he took second place in the relay and from 1991 to 1993 he took second place in the pursuit three times in a row. His brother is former cross-country skier Kristen Skjeldal .
