Yuri Iljitsch Burlakow ( Russian Юрий Ильич Бурлаков ; born January 31, 1960 ) is a former Soviet and later Swiss cross-country skier .

Career

Burlakow had his first international success at the Junior World Championships in 1980 in Örnsköldsvik . There he won the silver medal over 15 km and the gold medal with the relay. The following year he won silver over 15 km at the Winter Universiade in Candanchú . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 Burlakov won the title in the 4 × 10 km relay race together with the team from Norway together with Vladimir NikitinOleksandr Batjuk and Alexander Sawjalow . In the race over 50 km in classic style, he secured the silver medal behind the Swede Thomas Wassberg . Since the race was also counted as a World Cup race, with this podium he also achieved his best result in a distance World Cup. He finished the 1981/82 season with 56 points in tenth place in the overall World Cup ranking.

In the following season 1982/83 Burlakow started with a third place over the 15 km in Davos . Over the 50 km in Kawgolowo he was again on the podium in third place. At the end of the season he was in seventh place in the overall World Cup ranking.

At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , he finished eleventh in the 30 km race. In the overall World Cup Burlakow had to settle for 14th place in the 1983/84 season . As a result, he was only able to build on these successes to a limited extent. Although he regularly won World Cup points, there were no major successes. Only in the 1985/86 season he was able to land in the top 20 of the overall standings and came in 18th place.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , Burlakow started again over the 15 km in classic style and reached 10th place, 52.4 seconds behind the winner Marco Albarello from Italy. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he reached 12th place over the 30 km individual distance and 26th place over the 50 km distance. In his last World Cup season in 1988/89, he only won one World Cup. Point and was only 57th overall.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Burlakow switched to the Swiss Ski Association and again competed in several FIS races in Switzerland between 1996 and 1997 .
