Sunin was part of the Soviet squad for the newly created Ski Jumping World Cup in 1979 . His first jumping as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 , however, he was unsuccessful and only landed in the back places. In his first competition after the tour in St. Moritz , Switzerland , he was able to win his first World Cup points with 10th place. He also succeeded in doing this in Gstaad and Engelberg . He finished the season with 13 World Cup points in 60th place in the overall World Cup standings. In the following season, the Four Hills Tournament went better and he again achieved a place in the top ten with 9th place in Innsbruck . In Liberec he reached 3rd place for the first time and last time on the podium on January 11th. After he also completed his last World Cup competitions of the season within the points, he finished the season in 23rd place in the overall World Cup ranking. After the season, Sunin ended his active ski jumping career.
