In his second competition on January 1, 1981 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he made it into the World Cup points for the first time with 11th place. The following 1981/82 season was the most successful for Boll. So he was able to achieve the best result of his career on January 23, 1982 in Thunder Bay with 5th place. Despite changing results, he was in 42nd place in the overall World Cup ranking. In 1985 Boll became German champion on the normal hill in Braunlage . In the following years he could no longer build on his performance and ended his active career after the Four Hills Tournament in 1986/87 .
